The Sacrament of First Communion -

* completes initiation by welcoming the Baptised to the table of the Lord, becoming the Body of Christ to be food for the world.

* though children have been to Mass many times before, now receiving their First Communion, they come into the fullness of Church membership and the start of a life-time of receiving and becoming Christ to others.

In preparation for First Communion, families will participate in these steps:

Stage 1:   An enquiry and formation session for parents (only) to deepen their understanding of the Mass and the life of the parish.

Stage 2:   Four weekly gatherings of parents with their child in small family/home groups. Through these sessions, families discover that in receiving the body and blood of Christ, they are nourished to be disciples of Christ, to bring justice and peace to the world.

Stage 3:   Celebrate the Sacrament. As Easter is the time of completion of initiation into the church, First Communion for children normally is celebrated over 2 weekends near the end of the Easter Season.

Stage 4:   Growing in our faith as a family. After Pentecost, we gather with the wider parish community to celebrate the children's full membership in the Church and support other families as they live their faith.
