THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY

brian_100In the light of the ongoing debate concerning same-sex marriage not only in the local media but also currently before a number of legislatures around the world, I find myself coming back to the topic again even though I had addressed it recently. I think I would be right in thinking that for many of us the most vexing part of the issue is the use of the word ‘marriage’ itself to describe unions that traditionally were understood to be between a man and a woman.

A blog I read today helped me a little with the suggestion that rather than fight over the semantics of the word ‘marriage’ itself we might start to use another word in its place to represent what we as Christians understand to be the sacramental union of a man and woman directed towards the procreation and nurturing of a family, a cell of the broader Church of Christ.

Question of the Week PDF Print E-mail

"The Spirit of truch will guide you into all the truthJohn 16:13

questionAt school:  Do I love to tell the truth and find ideas that are true?

At work or study:  Does prayer help me discover the truth about ideas, about life?

In my family life:  When a decision of truth has to be made, do we ask God's spirit to guide us?

Words for this week.  Repeat frequently with love.

Jesus, tell us the many things you know.

BAPTISM PREPARATION MEETINGS PDF Print E-mail

baptismDuring the week we had a meeting of our Baptism Preparation Team in the parish to ‘update’ our documents and procedures in the light of the high frequency of requests for Christenings and the need to provide the best possible opportunity for new parents to understand and appreciate the meaning of the commitment they have undertaken. One outcome of the meeting is the idea of running the meetings for first-time parents as St. Cecilia’s as well as at St. Kieran’s throughout the year.

We are also conscious of the need to help parents through the bridging years from infancy to school enrolment and maintain the links they have forged with the catholic community. We will be looking for a few more volunteers to assist with these preparation meetings, ideally young parents from the St. Cecilia Community itself. If anyone is interested please let us know at the office.

Strictly Business PDF Print E-mail

strictly_businessThis weekend marks the third and final appeal for the financial year to the Charitable Works Fund (CWF). Envelopes for donations are attached to this week’s bulletin and are also available in the foyer of the Church. They can be left on the collection plate or at the office.

As the figures below show we are well short of our quota and have a long way to go before we even match the amounts donated in previous years. In the event there is a shortfall between our quota and the amount donated by parishioners, as has been the case in the last few years, the shortfall has to be made up from general parish funds (the second collection) so your generosity would be appreciated.

trinityTrinity Sunday, officially "The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity," is one of the few celebrations of the Christian Year that commemorates a reality and belief rather than a specific event or person. On Trinity Sunday we remember and honor the eternal God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday is celebrated the Sunday after Pentecost, and lasts only one day, which is symbolic of the unity of the Trinity

Children’s Liturgy is an opportunity for children to hear the Gospel at a level suitable to their understanding.  Parents who have a child/children 3 years of age or under are invited to attend with their child/children and are required to stay with them to help and guide them during the children’s liturgy session.  As the number of children now attending Children’s Liturgy is increasing this would greatly help the volunteers leading the session.
